Pancreatic Cancer Research & Education Act Update
Thanks to your continued efforts, we are nearing our goal of securing half the Senate and half the House as co-sponsors of the Pancreatic Cancer Research & Education Act (S.362/H.R. 733)! We need fewer than 25 members of Congress to meet our goal! We can do it, but we need your help. To learn how you can assist with this effort, please visit the Advocacy Action Center to send a message to your members of Congress about the importance of this life-saving legislation.
Federal Funding Update
The House and Senate have officially passed the FY 2012 Appropriations Omnibus (an omnibus is a large collection of bills packaged together). While we started the year facing the very real prospect of a drastic cut to cancer research funding, thanks to our advocacy efforts in collaboration with the One Voice Against Cancer Coalition (OVAC), cancer research at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) will not only avoid a cut, but will receive an increase. This is particularly significant given that most discretionary spending programs were cut and all programs (including NCI) were subjected to an across-the-board cut. NCI’s FY12 funding level is $5.081 billion before the across-the-board cut (a 0.5% increase over FY11) and will be $5.071 billion after the cut (a $13 million increase). The President is expected to sign the bill by December 23.
Check back for any further updates as we receive information concerning upcoming appropriations decisions in the coming weeks.
